Last week, I stopped for gum late one night at an empty gas station in Los Angeles. A beat-up Dodge van pulled up, and three drag queens jumped out, quite punk in ripped tights, smudged makeup, wigs that needed combing. One unfurled a tatty red carpet. Another set up a velvet rope, complete with stanchions.
