I spent five days last week in Cornwall, England, on assignment for an upcoming Travel + Leisure feature about artists and craftspeople around St. Ives.

(This explains, in case you were wondering, why I wound up standing in line for nine hours in Gatwick airport.)

There were a lot of queues during the week, a lot of overheard conversation. Personally, I’d forgotten how often Britons prefer “the sea” to “the ocean,” how often they employ the word “sorry,” but not for apology.
