The Sunday supplement: #47
A podcast in tribute to Dolores Haze and another about wild chocolate, selections for new/old/new-old music, Björk news again, good words about bacteria
Jamie Loftus is best known, I think, for her podcast about joining Mensa, but she also created “Lolita Podcast” in 2020, which I didn’t hear about until recently, and I’ve been barreling through it all week. It is excellent. Episodes cover seemingly every side of the industrial complex that’s grown up around Nabokov’s novel – the story, the fallout, the movies; the differences between “Lolita” and Dolores Haze; Lana Del Ray; Lolita Fashion (unrelated); and the many, many times the book’s been described as a love story, when it might be more accurately summarized as (trigger warning) a novel about a middle-aged man who kidnaps a 12-year-old girl and sexually assaults her several hundred times.
Anyway, the podcast is very well researched and a lot of fun, despite the subject.
Also, a fun new pod that a friend just made: “Obsessions: Wild Chocolate.”
For music this week, four selections. Btw did you know you can see Björk perform live tonight in Mark Zuckerberg’s fake world?
First two are the 21 Savage/Drake album while walking to work, which has several good songs, then a lot of Pigments while reading at night on the couch. Definitely one of my favorite albums released this year.
