A new app for discovering classical, primo wanderlust literature, and a comedy pro's current picks for three smart things to watch
Apple just released a separate app called “Classical” for Apple Music subscribers and it’s excellent. Based on Primephonic, the classical-exclusive streamer that Apple purchased in 2021, the app is full of playlists, special features, tons of albums, lots of live performances.
I’ve been using it all week and it’s much easier to search/explore/enjoy than Spotify. Here’s Chris Cohen in GQ:
The home page reflects current energy rather than fusty eat-your vegetables NPR didacticism: There are plenty of dead white dudes, but a quick scroll brings up Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the charismatic music director of the Metropolitan Opera, and Caroline Shaw, Pulitzer-prize winning composer and Kanye West collaborator. The promotional materials included a screenshot of Elgar’s Cello Concerto, surely a sly reference to Tár.
