A reader got in touch last night to say I was tote-blocking them by not naming the tote bag I carry to work. I can appreciate that; it’s this one in black, though there’s a lot I wish improved.

Regarding podcasts: Our smartphones are preloaded with at least one app to listen to them, but after sampling some alternatives – Downcast, Pocket Cast – I switched last year to the Overcast app (iPhone only, I think) and really like it.

Mostly it’s for the ease and functionality, how it prioritizes episodes in my preferred order, also its “Smart Speed” and “Voice Boost” options. And the design is quite nice.

Overcast’s developer is Marco Arment, formerly the CTO of Tumblr and the creator of Instapaper. Here’s a recent audio interview with him from The Verge if you want more detail.
