This weekend concludes the French Open, and this newsletter is being edited while I watch the French Open with French commentary in a French hotel – not for the French Open, unfortunately. However, feeling nostalgic, I recommend an old favorite, William Klein’s film The French, documenting the 1981 French Open from behind the scenes with extraordinary access to Björn Borg, John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Yannick Noah, et al.
Director Wes Anderson “presented” the film a couple years and commented:
For me, this film encapsulates everything I loved and love about the tennis of that moment; and in the hands of the great and singular William Klein, it is at once a gripping sports page, a fascinating piece of reportage, and a work of art.
