Let’s start with hotel bars. Here are some favorites if you find yourself roaming the United States. Hopefully they’re not all obvious ones for locals.

  • Los Angeles: Hotel Figueroa – downtown, light-filled, nice for a daytime meeting. Also love Tower Bar on the strip, Lily’s Bar in Hollywood when it’s not crowded, and The Georgian (bar and room) in Santa Monica.

  • Nashville: The Hermitage Hotel. Sit at the bar, not the little tables, order the deviled eggs.

  • Connecticut: The Tap Room at The Griswold Inn in Old Lyme, originally built in 1735 as a schoolhouse.
